Income Tax Planning

Year-Round Tax Strategy, Built Into the Plan.

Tax planning works best when it happens during the year, not at the deadline. The decisions that move a tax bill — Roth conversions, charitable giving timing, capital gains realization, RMD planning — all have to happen before December 31. By April, the window is already closed.

Black Diamond has an Enrolled Agent on staff — an IRS-recognized credential for individual and business tax expertise. We coordinate tax strategy with your CPA throughout the year, looking for the decisions — Roth conversions, harvest timing, RMD windows, charitable bunching — that compound into real after-tax wealth.

Ages: 62

Key Concerns:

  • A single year with an unusually large gain
  • The window before required distributions begin
  • Giving to causes she has supported for years

Denise sold the shop she had run for twenty-two years. The sale landed in one tax year; the rest of her life spans thirty. What she wanted to understand was not how to handle the tax on the sale — her CPA had that in hand — but what the years afterward should look like: the window between retiring and required distributions, when to claim Social Security against everything else, and whether the giving she had always done by cheque each December could be arranged more deliberately. Black Diamond mapped the decisions across years rather than filing seasons, and worked with her existing CPA rather than around him.

Income Tax Planning — Common Questions

Do you prepare tax returns?

We don't replace your CPA — but we coordinate with them throughout the year. Our Enrolled Agent works on the strategy side: when to do Roth conversions, when to realize gains, when to bunch charitable giving. The CPA handles the return.

When should we do a Roth conversion?

Roth conversions often work best in low-income years — between retirement and Required Minimum Distribution age, for example. We model the conversion against your projected tax brackets to find the years where conversion creates real long-term value.

What's the value of year-round tax planning?

Most tax-saving decisions have to happen before December 31. By April, the window is already closed. Year-round planning catches the decisions in time and coordinates them with the rest of your plan.
