Insurance Planning

Risk Management That Fits Your Plan.

Most people are over-sold on insurance they don't need and under-prepared for the risks they actually face. The job of insurance planning is to figure out the difference — and to build the coverage you do need into the rest of your financial plan, where it can earn its premium.

Black Diamond reviews your current coverage with a planner's eye — looking for gaps, redundancies, and policies that don't fit the rest of your plan. We focus on life, disability, and long-term care planning, and we coordinate every recommendation with the broader plan.

Ellen & Rob

Ages: 48 & 51

Key Concerns:

  • Coverage tied to a single employer
  • A term policy nearing the end of its level period
  • Long-term care, after watching a parent need it

Rob's life insurance came through work, which was fine until his company restructured and he started wondering what would happen to it if he left. A separate term policy bought when their eldest was born was approaching the end of its level premium period — a date neither of them had noticed. Then Ellen's mother moved into assisted living, and the cost of that care turned an abstract worry into a specific question. Black Diamond began with what the family already owned rather than what could be sold to them: what each policy actually covered, for how long, and what happened at each expiry. Because the firm holds no product contracts, the review was free to conclude that some of it was fine as it stood.

“My wife and I are very happy with Cam and Black Diamond Financial. Cam is responsive, understanding, and explains things very well to us. He’s on top of our account and takes everything into consideration for us related to our financial and personal situation. ( Taxes, Insurances, business, etc) I like the overall approach taken. It’s great knowing Cam has eyes on our portfolio and advises us in a timely manner when decisions are to be made.”

Insurance Planning — Common Questions

Why does insurance need a planner?

Because insurance products are often sold based on commission rather than coverage. A planner looks at your actual risk exposure — life, disability, long-term care, business — and recommends only the coverage you need. The role is planning and coordination, not product placement.

What kinds of insurance do you review?

Life, disability, long-term care, and business-related coverage (succession, key-person). We coordinate the strategy with your overall financial plan and work with licensed insurance professionals to place any policies you choose to put in place.

Can you review the policies I already have?

Yes — that's often where we start. Many clients come to us with policies that were appropriate ten years ago but no longer fit. We identify gaps, redundancies, and coverage that doesn't match the broader plan.
